Types
Four kinds, different in scope and effort
- Institutional
- Evaluates the whole institution — mission, governance, resources and effectiveness. Granted by regional or national bodies.
- Programmatic
- Focuses on specific programmes or professional fields: business (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA), engineering (ABET), health sciences (LCME, ACEN). Often required for licensure.
- Regional and national
- Country-specific accreditation ensuring compliance with local regulatory and quality standards.
- International
- Global recognition supporting partnerships, student mobility and institutional standing.

Accreditation is intimidating largely because it is long and the milestones are unclear. These are the four stages, in the order they actually happen.
