The journey
A multi-year process, made navigable
Accreditation is intimidating largely because it is long and the milestones are unclear. These are the four stages, in the order they actually happen.
Gap analysis and feasibility
A full review of current operations against the standard, identifying the gaps that matter in faculty qualifications, assurance of learning and strategic planning — and an honest view of whether the timeline is realistic.
Strategic alignment
Refining mission statements, developing the strategic plan the standard expects to see, and establishing the tracking mechanisms that evidence faculty intellectual contribution.
Assurance of Learning
Designing closed-loop assessment that demonstrates student competency and genuinely drives curriculum improvement, rather than producing paperwork for the review.
Report writing and site visit

Types
Four kinds, different in scope and effort
- Institutional
- Evaluates the whole institution — mission, governance, resources and effectiveness. Granted by regional or national bodies.
- Programmatic
- Focuses on specific programmes or professional fields: business (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA), engineering (ABET), health sciences (LCME, ACEN). Often required for licensure.
- Regional and national
- Country-specific accreditation ensuring compliance with local regulatory and quality standards.
- International
- Global recognition supporting partnerships, student mobility and institutional standing.
